There are the Great Lakes (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior) all around Michigan, and there are many various lakes around the northern part of Minnesota and are often referred to as the Boundary Waters.
Glaciers from the last ace age formed the Great Lakes as well as many of the North American lakes.
Some fruit trees may not grow as well around there because of the excess moisture that comes off the lakes in all seasons, winter or summer. A large system of lakes tend to have their own weather patterns, which can be variable.
The five lakes you are inerested in are the Greta Lakes. Only Lake Michigan is entirely in the US. Lakes Superior, Huron, Erie and Ontario straddle the US/Canadian border. There is a sixth lake in the group (St. Clair) which is considerably smaller, it is also on the border.
