Where do Buddhas come from?

Buddhism originated in what is now India, and then spread all over Asia, and now, it's gaining its own traditions in Europe and America. Buddhas are different than Buddhists. A Buddha is an enlightened being, and we all have a Buddha nature, and can become Buddhas, even if in this lifetime we don't practice the Dharma. Buddhists are those who practice the Dharma, or the path toward enlightenment as taught by Guatama Buddha.

How many Buddha's?

The number of people who are fully realized enlightened Buddhas is unknown. Since we all have a Buddha spirit in us, we can all become fully enlightened. Therefore the number of potential Buddhas is the same as the number of people alive.

Why are Buddhas called Buddhas?

"Buddha" means "the Fully Enlightened One"Buddhahood is attained through the realisation of the intrinsic / true nature of all things in the universe, including existence / mind & body / life; without the help of a teacher.Anyone who becomes enlightened through the teachings of the Buddha is known as an Arahant / Arahat.

Is there only one Buddha?

No. Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism, is often called the historical Buddha, but he is not the only buddha. He taught that everyone can become a buddha just like him. The word buddha means "awake,' so this means that a buddha is someone who is awake, or enlightened. Everyone has the capacity to become a buddha because all beings already possess the buddha nature; it just has to be made consciously manifest through the process of enlightenment. There have been countless buddhas, both celestial buddhas and buddhas in human form. An example of a celestial buddha is Amitabha, the Buddha of Infinite Light, one of the most popular objects of worship in Buddhism. An example of a human buddha is Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche, often called the Second Buddha. He brought Buddhism from India to Tibet in the 8th century.

How many different versions of Buddhism are there?

There are really only 2 distinct types of Buddhism, though there are subgroups to them. The two major groups are Theravada and Mahayana. Theravada is call the "teachings of the Elders" and is most closest to the original teachings of the Buddha. Mahayana incorporates teachings of later Buddhas and Bodisatvas into the Buddhas original teachings. All the differnt lineages of Buddhism fall within one of these two groups but all teachings agree as to what the Buddha taught and to what the objective of Buddhism is.

Is it offensive to name your cat Buddha?

Not at all.

Which Buddhas are female?

No Buddha is a female.Every Buddha was a male.Answer:It partly depends on your interpretation of Buddhahood. Mahayana Buddhism more commonly sees the path of a bodhisattva as a compliment to enlightenment. A Buddha is an individual who has achieved Enlightenment such as the Sakyamuni Buddha or the Amitabha Buddha. A Bodhisattva is a person who has achieved Enlightenment or Buddhahood, but has vowed to return to the world and the cycle of death and rebirht to aid all sentient beings on their paths to Buddhahood. Kuan Yin (Bodhisattva of compassion) is a female Bodhisattva known in China as Kuan Yin, in Japan as Kannon, and in Korea as Kwanseum Bosal.

How did Buddhas put their teachings into practice?

Buddhists consciously perform their tasks (eating, walking, working, etc) throughout the day mindfully as the Buddha indicated we should and reflect during the day on our actions of body, speech and mind to see where we need to practice harder. In this way we ensure that we are putting the Buddha's teachings into all our activities.

How many buddists are there?

No one knows! That is one of the things we are taught is to not brag or show off. And since reaching enlightenment does not have obvious outward appearances, except for maybe being extremely happy, there is no way to know but to ask someone. So as you walk down the street, as you see each person you might think Buddha?... Buddha?..... Buddha?....

Why do Buddhas have snails on their heads?

the buddhas have snails on their heads to symbolize the fact that the buddha relied on the nature to protect him from sunburn as he was meditating for all of the rest of his life... here is the story One day, the Buddha was on a walk and began thinking very deeply. He came to a tree and sat down in its shade to continue his meditation. Hours passed, and the Buddha became so immersed in thought that he didn't notice the sun moving across the sky. The sun beat down on his bare head, and still he sat thinking. A snail was making its way along the ground, and he noticed the Buddha sitting there, thinking important thoughts. Snails are tough creatures, but they are made of moisture, and have to be very careful of drying out, so the snail saw right away that the Buddha's head was soon going to become a painful distraction to his great thoughts. As fast as it could, the snail made its way up the Buddha's robe to his head, and sat there, with his mucous-y body cooling the Buddha's smooth, bare skin. Other snails noticed and followed the first one, covering Buddha's head in a neat cap of spiral shells and cool, damp bodies. Hours passed, and the snails became parched and dry. When evening fell and Buddha stood, noticing his surroundings once more, he found he was wearing 108 snails, all of whom had given their lives to further Buddha's path to enlightenment. These snails are now honored as martyrs and are shown on many statues of the Buddha to remind us of their sacrifice.
