The leading cause of death in the U.S. in 1900 was heart disease. The second leading cause was influenza. The data is available from the Program for the Human Environment, Rockefeller University, New York, N.Y. "Based on CDC statistics ..., the death rate per 100,000 population has decreased almost in half from about 1,548 in 1900 to 799 in 2005. But in 1900, about a third of the deaths were from pneumonia, tuberculosis, and diarrhea, the top three causes. By comparison, in 2005, almost half of the deaths were from heart disease and cancer, the top two causes. In 1900, heart disease and cancer accounted for only 13 percent of the deaths. The rate of death from cancer has nearly tripled and the rate for heart disease has nearly doubled from 1900 to 2005. The rate of death from accidents was almost twice as high in 1900 as in 2005." http://stay-healthy-enjoy-life.blogspot.com/2008/04/causes-of-death-2005-versus-1900.html

I recently went to CDC (central disease center) and a disease that was really big during the 1900's was smallpox. It was very deadly and tragic. Luckily, there is no more small pox carried around the world today, you could say it's "extinct" but the CDC does carry it in their labs. This is a very cool disease to look into. Hope this helped!Gabby, from GA
