You're talking about the Mercury Theater production of H.G.Wells' "War of the Worlds",
directed by Orson Welles and broadcast on Halloween night in 1938.
The production was formatted as a series of live news reports from correspondents
live on the scene, such as you'd expect nowadays from CNN or the Weather Channel
when something big is happening.
The radio production took regular commercial and station breaks, and each time it resumed,
it re-introduced itself as a play, a radio script, based on a popular book of Science Fiction.
But a lot of people were more comfortable being scared.
