Arabs at the time of Mohmmad were very interested in linguistics, documentation, and family lineage. it happens that Mohammad was born in the center of the Arab world at the time (Mecca) to one of the most powerful, honorable, rich, and of purest lineage, families at the time and until right now in the middle east can trace their ancestries all the way to Adam, yes the Biblical Adam! He was noticed since his birth, he was different, he was actually called the Honest and the Faithful because he did not lie or cheat, drink alcohol or even commit adultery of which was the norms of the day. Even thought he did not learn to read and write, he was a good business man, he did the Qurieshan 2 yearly trade trips, at the age of 25 and older rich woman from Quriesh sought him to be her business partner for all of the above, and later he married her... bottom line, everything that was witnessed by an Arab at the time was well known and ended up being documented, but the most interesting documentation way was when the Arabs started documenting the Hadeeth (everything witnessed of Mohammad - after he became a prophet), Dedicated people travelled all across Arabia to talk with anyone that have ever witnessed anything Mohammad said or done, they actually included the Character flaw in the person speaking, if he was forgetful or so, and if it was not direct observation like John told Jim, they seek the closest in the chain that is still alive and documented breaks in the chain, so last but not least lots of Hadeeth was rejected because of broken chains and character flaws like if someone caught lying... the last point, because Mohammad (saaw = the Lord Praised him) known to Muslims that he does not speak of his own will and speaks or acts of what the Lord has approved, and every thing he did was a way of life to be followed or imitated, basically if you do everything proper, you dont steel cheat or lie, you dont hurt people and you do what your faith requires you to, you end up in Heaven, so the easiest way was to follow the path of the prophet and what was documented of him...
