The war was called the American Revolution as it was won by the colonies, it is also known as the American War of Independence. It lasted from 1775 to 1781 and declared the United States of America's independance from England. The war becan simply as defensive movements against the increasingly tyranical actions of the crown's army in the colonies, and was not a blatant war in colonial minds until 1776 with the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The Commander and Chief throught was George Washington, and the Battle of Yorktown is considered the battle which ended the war.
