There are 9, 6 or 4 time zones for the US depending on whether you count only the mainland 48 states, all 50 states, or all states and territories.

There are 4 zones in the continental US 48 states (from east to west):

  1. Eastern
  2. Central
  3. Mountain
  4. Pacific

There are 6 if you include time zones for all 50 states (from east to west):

  1. Eastern Time is Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) minus 5 hours, (5 hours behind Greenwich, England = GMT -5)
  2. Central Time is GMT -6
  3. Mountain Time - is GMT -7
  4. Pacific Time is GMT -8
  5. Alaska Time is GMT -9
  6. Hawaii Time is GMT -10

There are 9 standard time zones for the USA and Territories (from east to west), according to a quote from the Related Link [below]:

  1. Atlantic Standard Time (AST)
  2. Eastern Standard Time (EST)
  3. Central Standard Time (CST)
  4. Mountain Standard Time (MST)
  5. Pacific Standard Time (PST)
  6. Alaskan Standard Time (AKST)
  7. Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time (HST)
  8. Samoa standard time (UTC-11)
  9. Chamorro Standard Time (UTC+10)

The US has six time zones. They are:

  • Eastern
  • Central
  • Mountain
  • Pacific
  • Alaska
  • Hawaii-Aleutian

The states within each zone are:

Eastern
Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia. In addition to these states, there are several states that have some parts of the state on Eastern time and some parts on Central time, those states are Alabama, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and Tennessee.

Also Washington, DC, although not a state, is in the Eastern time zone.

Central
Alabama *, Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma**, Wisconsin. As mentioned above under the Eastern time zone listings, there are also parts of the following states that are officially in the Eastern time zone with the remainder of the state on Central time: Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and Tennessee. Other states in the Central time zone officially have parts on Central time and parts of the state on Mountain time. Those are Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Texas.

*One city in Alabama (Phenix City) operates on the same time zone as Georgia (Eastern) since it is next to the Metropolitan area of Columbus, Georgia, although it is legally listed as in the Central Time Zone along with the rest of Alabama.

**Like Alabama, there is a location within the state of Oklahoma that does not operate on its official time zone, the area is Kenton that observes Mountain time.

Mountain
Arizona***, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho**, Oregon**, Nevada**, North Dakota*, South Dakota*, Nebraska*, Kansas*, and Texas*.

*As previously mentioned, the states of Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Texas all have parts of the state that are officially on Central time with the remaining parts officially on Mountain time.

**These states, Idaho, Oregon, and Nevada have portions that are officially on Pacific time.

***Arizona is in the Mountain time zone, but because they never observe Daylight Savings Time, for part of the year, that puts them on the clock in tune with the Pacific time zone (mid-March to the first part of November).

And, Oklahoma has one unofficial area (Kenton) on Mountain time.

Pacific
California, Washington, Oregon*, Nevada*, Idaho*, Arizona**

*Oregon, Nevada, and Idaho have officially designated sections of the state that are on Mountain time.

**Arizona is in the Mountain time zone, but because they never observe Daylight Savings Time, for part of the year, that puts them on the clock in tune with the Pacific time zone and not the same as their official zone of Mountain (mid-March to the first part of November).

Alaska
All of the state of Alaska, except part of the Aleutian Islands off the Western side of the state, which are in the Hawaii-Aleutian time zone.

Hawaii-Aleutian
Hawaii, and the Aleutian Islands that are west of 169° 30′ W longitude. Since Hawaii does not observe Daylight Savings time and the Aleutian Islands do, for part of the year their clocks are not coordinated for this reason.

The official, legal specification of the lines of division of the different time zones in the US are recorded in the Federal Register, Code of Federal Regulations at 49 CFR 71.

View the standard time zone boundaries.

Daylight Saving Time begins at 2:00 a.m. local time on the second Sunday in March. On the first Sunday in November areas on Daylight Saving Time return to Standard Time at 2:00 a.m. The names in each time zone change along with Daylight Saving Time. Eastern Standard Time (EST) becomes Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), and so forth. Arizona, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, U.S. Virgin Islands and American Samoa do not observe Daylight Saving Time. Read more about the new federal law that took effect in March 2007 which extended Daylight Saving Time by four weeks.
