From my research the original Navajo story about the three sisters is that they are actually a mother walking with her daughter being led by an uncle who is walking with a cane. I would read Robert McPherson's book 'Sacred Land, Sacred View' and 'A Navajo Legacy' by Robert McPherson and John Holiday (a Monument Valley Medicine Man) Both books have stories of the monuments there.
