I work as a videographer and have a college degree. I do not need it in my work but it is helpful in convincing others you are serious about your work. You will need to study lighting, lendes and filters. Time should be spent learning about what each effects the other. Study the great photographers of the past and current times and see what they capture. Basic liberal arts courses should help you with a gemeralized knowledge of your craft.

What license do you need to become a photographer?

No, anyone can be a photographer without a license. I would consider a high school student with a camera who is on the yearbook committee to be a photographer, just not one who gets paid. There are a lot more examples of that, I'm sure. If you expect to open a studio, that could be a different story. Check your city hall licensing office.
