Supposedly to represent the different views of those collective groups. For example, liberal groups are intended to show for those wanting change and freer lives, religious groups may have a party to represent "their faith", and conservative parties attempt to maintain the ststua quo or even restore the older systems. Some parties have a specific intent in mind (the 'Legalise Cannabis' parties in some countries, for example) while others have a broader view. It allows people with similar and consistent aims in politics to band together and have a larger effect with the same amount of resources.
