Because so many people died whilst they helped to build the Great Wall of China and they were buried in graves under the wall itself, many people have been taught at school that one of its nicknames is "The Longest Graveyard in the World". This information may or may not be taught at schools in China but nevertheless it is taught to pupils at schools in many countries around the world as part of the basic information they are given to learn about The Great Wall of China. Justification of the Misused Nickname Despite there were thousands of people died during the construction of the Great Wall of China, it's still unfair to call it "The Longest Graveyard in the World". All brilliant buildings in the world were made by the laboring populace under the oppression of their rulers. In this case, tyranny may be regarded as graveyard of its people, the guilt cannot be laid with these buildings. Besides this, it also should be mentioned that the Great Wall served its purpose and saved several-fold number of living compared to the dead, which is often neglected. I'm surprised to know there are many students have been taught at schools outside China about this nickname. But I don't think there have a common sense about it since I searched it on the internet and very little results found, which are not on official websites. So I'm here to justify this false belief, to tell people that the Great Wall has very important position in Chinese people's mind. As it is deeply rooted in Chinese history, it became a symbol of cohesion. Please don't let someones misunderstandings affect your judgement. What in past is past, if people keep asking a nickname of this history, I offer my personal suggestion, call it "Sorrow of one Dynasty".

There is no generally well-known nickname for the people who died building the Great Wall of China and were then buried under it. They must have been very brave and hard-working people and some of them may have suffered before they died. It would be very unkind to give them any nickname.
