When engine temperature climbs near to 100C this light turns on. But this is a late response to alert you that your engine can burn. I suggest you install a numeric thermometer. It's worth knowing the light is wired to the oil pressure light via a diode (like an electrical one-way valve) This is so the bulb lights with the ignition on but the engine stopped- Renault's cheap yet reliable way of letting you know the bulb's not blown. (otherwise it would only ever illuminate upon overheating!) The product of this, to the observant, is the lights work simultaneously on normal starting and stopping, giving the (wrong) impression something's amiss.

Why does the engine temperature rise when the car idles?

Engine temperature rising when the engine is idling is normal. The car is sitting still and no air is entering the engine compartment. This will cause the engine temperature to rise. The cooling fans then come on and the engine returns to a normal temperature. Unless the cooling fans do not bring the temperature down, you have no problems and this is totally normal.

Why doesn't the temperature gauge of a 93 Ply Voyager 3.0 go up when driving but if parked goes up to normal?

I presume the engine is running when the car is parked if the temperature guage does not move to the normal position when the car is moving at road speed but goes up when the car is stopped and the engine idling, then more than likely the thermostat is bad and needs to be replaced. If you se that the temperature guage is in the normal position anafter the car has been running a while and the temperature guage then goes down when the car is moving at road speed, then this confirms that the thermosta is bad.
