195 to 210 degrees. Is normal Those engines were equipped with 180 degree thermostats from the factory. A properly sized cooling system should maintain that temperature in all but the most severe circumstances.
I believe 180 F for most of the older small block chevy. Make sure the head gasket has "steam holes" since only the 400 uses them. The steam holes are above and below adjacent cylinders. Dennis

First, the engine must be a normal operating temperature (drive a few times around the block) and then add small amounts of fluid to the transmission checking the level frequently. Overfilling the transmission can do just as much harm as not having enough fluid. Be very careful to not overfill. More is not better in this case.
