Your information is conflicting. The 4.2L is a 6 cylinder engine. 4 cylinder YJ's all have a 2.5L engine, so I'm not sure which you have, but remembering the capacities is easy. According to the Chilton manual, it's 4 qts. for a 4 cylinder, 6 qts. for a six cylinder. Both volumes include the filter. Always be careful and don't overfill. To be safe, I always add 4 qts. to my 4.2L, then add 1/2 qt at a time checking the dipstick after each addition.
The engine oil capacity for the 1992 2.3L is 5 quarts (includes filter).

Is the 1990 car a V6 or 4cyl? The 1988 is either a 2.2L or 2.5L four cylinder "tall deck" engine. Is the '88 engine turbo charged? Many issues involved. If the 1990 engine is a four cylinder then it is a "common block" unit. 1988 and earlier 4cyl's use a different ECU than the 1989+ common block engines. Electrical harness is different if the 1990 engine is a V6 or a turbo 4cyl. More info needed.
