Technically, the oldest business in Chicago is C.D. Peacock Jewelers, which was opened in 1837 by Elijah Peacock. It has been franchised and divided into many smaller stores, but there are still Peacock outlets at 520 N. Michigan Avenue and in the suburban malls.
The oldest continuous business which has remained within the same family ownership is Iwas Ries Tobacco at 19 S. Wabash. It has been in business since 1857. Jaeger Funeral Home is a very close second, as it has been in the Jaeger family since 1858.
