QANTAS Queensland and Northern Territories Airline Service started in Longreach Queensland in 1920. After WW11 DC3 Douglas Dakotas were available but they were found to be unable to lift the specified payload in the hot thin air of an Australian summer. They removed the wings and inserted an extra 6 foot section at the wing root to give better lift.
