The United Nations was set up after WW2 to prevent future wars and protect smaller countries.
The Western European countries created several organizations. NATO is one example. This organization was created by Western Europe and the United States to protect Western Europe from a possible Soviet invasion. The Western European Union is another example. This union was created to unite Western Europe. However, this organization is now dissolved and was engulfed in the European Union in 2011. The European Union is also another example. Though this union now includes parts all over Europe, it was first created by Western European nations.
NATO stands for Northern Atlantic Treaty Organization. It protected the countries that unified with this Organization. (USA, Canada and the United Kingdom)
