The battle of Okinawa showed that the Japanese solders and people would fight and die until they had used all of their ammunition. It did not matter how their situation might be. It did not matter if they were starving to death. They would continue to fight. Finally they ran out of ammunition and surrendered.

As a result, the Americans figured it would cost many many lives to invade Japan. The people would fight to the death. President Truman decided the United States would use the Atomic Bomb and bring the war to a swift conclusion.
