The computer in your vehicle monitors several sensors and controls the function of the engine to produce the most power using the minimum fuel while producing as little emissions as possible.

The oxygen sensor monitors the exhaust to make certain that the engine is running properly. By checking the amount of oxygen in the exhaust, the engine can deliver more or less fuel to the intake. When the oxygen sensor(s) fail, the computer can only "guess" and reverts to a safe mode, which will not produce as much power and will definitely not give the best fuel economy. When running that way the vehicle will also produce more hydrocarbon and/or possibly other emissions.

Whenever the computer notifies you that your oxygen sensor has failed, replace it at once. That way you will avoid problems.

In any "V" configure engine (V6, V8, V10) there will be two oxygen sensors. It's best to replace them both at the same time.
