In Neil Flambé and the Aztec Abduction, the backdrop is Mexico City, where Neil is a contender in a two-week battle of the chefs. He is propelled by his fervour for fame, and a good chance of winning the $250,000 prize that would cover the restaurant renovations taking place at Chez Flambé. Neil's sous-chef in the contest is his laid-back, shaggy-haired cousin, Larry, a self-confessed "babe magnet," motorcycle rider and consummate coffee drinker, who is also a virtual encyclopedia of facts and a perfect contrast to the hot-tempered, driven young chef. Neil's girlfriend, Isabella, is also in Mexico City, visiting a fair-trade flower co-operative for her perfume business, and she sits in the stands ready to cheer Neil on to victory. In the first duel, Neil takes the advantage of using his nose. He sniffs out lamb shanks as the soon to be revealed main ingredient in a locked chest. Neil tries to give his sous-chef a heads-up. Most scenes with his cousin Larry are hilarious:
"Psst, Larry," Neil whispered … "We're going to make Oaxacan Mole sauce and lamb shanks."
"Whack-a-mole sauce?" Larry said. "On pancakes? I dunno. Sounds gross to me."
Neil tried to articulate the menu again … "I said 'whoa-hock-an mole-eh' sauce."
"Mohican bowling socks?"
"Never mind," Neil sighed, "… just heat some oil and grate some chocolate as quickly as you can."
"You got it, Neil," Larry said. "You can count on me." He walked back to his place at the counter, still wondering what bowling Mohicans had to do with grated chocolate and cooking oil.
Once the chest is opened, the mystery begins. Neil finds a note on top of his lamb shanks, warning him that unless he wins every duel and then loses the last, his girlfriend, who has just been abducted, will die. When Neil looks into the stands, Isabella is missing from her seat.
