Australian Labor Party (currently in government in all Australian states and federally as well), Liberal Party of Australia, National Party, Country Liberal Party, Australian Greens, Family First, Christian Democratic Party, Democrats, Democratic Labor Party, One Nation ...
Currently the Australian Labour Party (ALP) is in government with Julia Gillard as Prime Minister. However, on the 21st of August, Australia is going to the polls to elect a new federal government.
Currently, as of 1 September 2010, this question is still unresolved. Neither party has "won" as neither party has the required number of seats to form government. Counting of all postal votes has not yet finished, and the three Independents are yet to state their alliance with either major party.
Australia has Federal, State and Local governments. Assuming you mean the Federal Government the main party is the Australian Labor Party (ALP), but it governs with the support of some independents and an Australian Greens representative (members of parliament - MPs - in the House of Representatives, or Lower House) . The ALP do not have a majority in the Senate (Upper House) either.
1996 to 2007 it was the Liberal/National Party Coalition, 2007-? it's been the Labor Party. Now there's an election on August 21 so who knows.

Political parties have an important role to play in inducting/influencing members of the society in direct/indirect political participation in governing the state. The state has been assigned a function with the will of the people and by the people to govern by indirect representation through members elected in a political party. The non governing political parties become oppositions and expose the policies and the weaknesses in governing of the government by elected political party of the state to the people.

Usually the government is under the control of a political party or a coalition of political party's. If your party does not have control of the government but does have seats in the parliament or senate then it is an opposition party. That is a party that opposes the government. The official opposition is the party with the second most seats in the house of commons.
