One of the primary dangers of the internet is viruses. Whenever you load a page or download something, viruses can infect your computer. The best way to avoid getting viruses is to install a good antivirus program such as shaw secure or Norton antivirus.

One of the other dangers is mainly in social networking sites such as facebook or twitter. Cyber bullying can happen on any of these sites. It's just like regular bullying, but over the internet.

Paying for things online can also lead to Identity theft. Only buy things from sites that you trust, or create a PayPal account.

Scam and fraud are by far the most dangerous. prevalent and on the rise. The most common scam happens in the background and not a concern unless you own/operate a site or a set of them. assume (example...) "example.xyz" was a mega-site 10 yrs ago...they had tons of great content, user forums, news, useful info, great user exp., major ad-revenue...even a respected web store.

Well at some point example.xyz lost traffic, subs, adverts, their service is no longer relevant...they shut their doors and the last thing to sell was the DN: "example.xyz"

use a whois lookup to see what's happened to youroldfavsite.xyz to see if it is what is WAS when you 1st used it.

DN's likely to attract direct traffic are usually for sale...dogs.xyz, guns.xyz, celebs.xyz, porn.xyz, lolcats.xyz will command high prices regardless of content. On the Web and in North America especially, we love drugs, guns, violence, sex, celebrities, cats and dogs...the DNs are =lly valuable.

...but what about (example) "getyour$.xyz"?

---->assume: created today...has NO CONTENT(just a WP template usually or an "under-construction" sign)----> it has no value

...but what if you knew someone who owned 1,000,000 domains at example_host_server.com?

...he may suggest you leave the page as-is...and let it function as a backlinker/pingbot/trackbacker...then "getyour$.xyz" cooperates w/ other bot-sites to direct artificial traffic between bogus sites. w/in a week "getyour$.xyz" appears to get 1.000,000 hits/day & 25,000 other sites link to it....now you can list it for $2000 and sell to the first sucker who bids.

PUMP and DUMP. it's 100yr old stockbroker scam.

Users: if not obvious---emails from a "Nigerian Prince" who "needs your help cuz you're American" that's "going to give you at least $18,000,0000 in an account in your name all you gotta do is open one" ....(and btw he needs your SSN...) an extremely overt ex. but quite common.

****Any email promising $ if you provide personal info=SCAM.****

****Any add-on to SN's (like "see who viewed your profile on FB"...just provide your pswd and/or contact list)=SCAM.**** its tempting to spy on your spouse, kids, boss... but if you fall for this...you will either crash your CPU, your LAN, or send spam including porn to your contacts...expect lots of calls and emails, a friend or associate will prob. see it b4 you do.

The two biggest WebDev scams are a new group of "professionals" who claim to be

"SEO Specialists" or "Wordpress Consultants"

----WP makes building a web site easy (If I can do it...you can) it's good for large companies and major blogs w/ 1,000,000 readers as it is good for an ol' antique shop or a struggling artist.

All these groups want:

a) traffic "to get noticed" -to be accessible.

b) credibility.

c) an online brand/presence.

"Building a Web site" still sounds complicated...how to attract visitors sounds even more daunting.

The truth:

WP is one of several tools you can use to build a site YOURSELF..

****if you found this article, you know enough about the Web to build a decent site.****

A hosting company will provide the site, a template for you and assist you with tech issues. they offer varying security levels, speed and memory to meet your needs...it's usually $100 down and $5-$50/mo ...the "WP Consultant" (who may be a computer pgm. or a fly-by-night)...will tell you to refer to free tutorials avail. and the free codex...They target artists and small business. At best they will setup the things you can easily do yourself.

****To add original design/fxn/style just buy a bookon HTML, Javascript and CSS****

"SEO Specialists" are by far the worst. Most website traffic comes thru SEs and by far the most popular is Google. These "experts" have "insider knowledge" of how the GSE works and how to design pages that will show up 1st or high for common search terms related to your site.

****info on how Google ranks sites based on search terms is avail. to the public.****

The exact algorithm changes constantly and anyone claiming to have insider-info about it is lying

Worse, they PROMISE YOU TRAFFIC (hits, pageviews, sessions, engagement, ad-impressions, clicks..etc). "Guarantees" and "Promises" related to $ or the future of website is a RED FLAG. ..small business, artists ...anyone living on the margin is vulnerable to the buzzards.

side note: "viruses" irrelevant to internet in 2014...simple to protect your data w/o buying expensive software. keep important data where you always have..in hard-copy in a private/secure location if you get a "virus"..revert to an image of your OS that auto-generates or can be created at any time.

if privacy is an issue: stay off SN sites completely. if privacy is a serious issue...you should not use the 'net PERIOD. ex: a mouse-down-event jquery hack ripped my Google pswd and wreaked havoc on my YouTube pg. ---->It took me 2 hours to trace his host-server, domains, IPs...his personal IP, his full name, age, address and same for his associates. Security and privacy will never be a guarantee on the internet.

Banking online OR in person- not private. not secure. Did your debit card# get jacked at a major retailer last holiday? Mine and millions of others did. A competent programmer can get into your bank, copy your credit-card info...and create a carbon-copy of your card using a hotel card-key.

---use gift-cards online. Set your daily cash-w/drawal and spending limit LOW.

Bullying -keep kids off SN sites if this is going on. Browsers have unlimited controls for parents -all built in.
