In order to prevent the usage of just one main product, each company made their instrument(s) different from the others. Therefore, no, they are no compatible. (AKA, you cannot use Guitar Hero instruments with/in replacement as Rock Band 3 ones, or any type of Rock Band.) I have Guitar Hero World Tour and I can play Rock Band 2 (not 1) and The Beatles release with my instruments. I know that I can not use Rock Band instruments for Guitar Hero.

yes, multiplayer has to have 2+ unless you are playing online.

It probably can, though I doubt it. There always seems to be bugs with combining Rock Band to Guitar Hero. Although, every previous guitar hero controller does work with Rock Band.
