Currently, several cellular telephone technologies are in operation in the United States. Advanced Mobile phone Service (AMPS) was the first-generation cellular telephone system; it covered almost all of North America ans was founded in more than 35 countries. AMPS used frequency division multiplexing technology which operates like television transmissions. AMPS was the cellular equivalent of the "plain old telephone system" (POTS). Which no longer offered by cellular phone companies.
Digital-Advanced Mobile Phone Service (D-AMPS) is the newer digital equivalent of analong cellular telephone service. It uses time division multiplexing technology in addition to frequency division multiplexing and provides greater signal clarity and security than AMPS.
