Department of State
The Department of State is a cabinet level of the Federal Government in the US that reports directly to the US President. The department was created to deal with other nations regarding good relations, propose treaties, and handle a large variety of issues between the US and other nations. Most countries of the world have similar departments. The names may be different but their function is basically the same as the US Dept. of State.

The State Department, headed by the Secretary of State, has the primary responsibility for shaping and implementing US foreign policy. The Department of Defense also plays a significant role, particularly in areas related to defense alliances, military cooperation, and potential military interventions. The National Security Council, although not an executive department, also plays a vital role in coordinating and advising the President on foreign policy matters.

The US federal executive department that handles foreign affairs is the Department of State. It is responsible for the conduct of US diplomacy and promoting US interests abroad.
The State Department was created in 1789 as the Department of Foreign Affairs. It was given responsibilities within the US and renamed in 1789.

In 1892, the New York Herald proposed the abolition of the US Department of State. The rational of this drastic proposal was that this department had so little to do with conducting business overseas.
