It is caused by winter and when water keeps on dripping in the same spot. In colder weather, water causes cracks to expand, while cold causes cement or asphalt to contract, which causes widening of cracks. The sun adds heat which adds to expansion, along with water.

Does salt erode concrete?

Yes, it may take several years until it is noticeable depending on how much and how often it is used. If you notice pitting or sparring that is the first signs of damage. There are alternatives to salt for walkways and driveways that are "safe for concrete surfaces" but you will pay a premium for these products.

Why do people put crack in sidewalks and bridges?

Cracks are inserted into large plains of concrete or asphalt to provide flexibility. In sidewalks, cracks are used to form a grid and the grid size is based on the surface area of the concrete or asphalt. When tree roots or something like that grow under the pad, they increase the risk of pushing the pad up. if the pad is one solid piece, it will end up breaking. In bridges, cracks are inserted to provide flexibility. When the wind blows, the bridge will slightly move. This is to prevent the major damage of how bldgs and bridges used to get when storms or natural disasters occured.

How much weight will a concrete driveway hold?

The amount of weight a concrete driveway will hold without doing damage would be determined on many factors. For instance, consolidated area of weight..ie.#'s per sq. foot, concrete strenght, amount of reinfocement in concrete, compaction of soil under concrete when placed, thickness of concrete, etc. Most driveways should be able to handle a concrete delivery truck if the drive way doesnt have any abrupt edges that truck must cross and the tires stay a reasonable distance from the edges..Hope this helped..and enjoy the pool if that is your project

Why are sidewalks are usually built with cracks in them?

Okay, so think about it. If a sidewalk was not built with cracks in it, then eventually weathering and erosion would cause cracks anyway. Then, whenever it rained, rainwater would get in the cracks. Stay with me now! If the temperature then dropped below the freezing point (32 degrees F, 0 degrees C), then the water in the cracks will freeze. When water freezes, it expands, which would exert pressure on the sidewalk, eventually causing the sidewalk to further crack or even split in two! If a sidewalk already has minimal, purposefully placed cracks in it, then the damage can be minimized.

How do tornadoes affect building or bridges?

Depending on the quality and and type of construction of the bridge or building and the intensity of the tornado, structures can suffer varying degrees of damage. Damage may range from minor, superficial damage, to complete destruction.

Why does the expansion joints in a sidewalk get narrow in the summer and get wider in the winter?

Expansion joints in sidewalks are designed to accommodate the natural expansion and contraction of the concrete due to temperature changes. In the summer, the concrete expands with the heat, causing the joints to narrow. In winter, when the concrete contracts in the cold, the joints widen to prevent cracking and damage to the sidewalk.

Can cracking your own back and neck cause any long- or short-term damage?

All depends on how you crack them. Cracking your back by stretching it or your neck by rolling it around shouldn't cause any damage. But, if you use your hands to twist your neck around to get it to pop, you risk possibly damaging the vertebrae in your neck (either slipping, cracking, or even possibly rupturing a disk in extreme cases).

Do you damage the cartilage in your knuckles when you crack your knuckles?

No, cracking your knuckles does not damage the cartilage in your joints. The sound is caused by gas bubbles rapidly forming and collapsing within the joint fluid. However, excessive knuckle cracking over time can lead to reduced grip strength and swelling in the hands.

What do your knuckles look like after years of cracking them?

Frequent knuckle cracking does not appear to cause long-term harm or lead to arthritis, contrary to popular belief. However, excessive cracking may stretch the ligaments in the knuckles or make them looser over time. This can potentially lead to some minor swelling or discomfort in the affected area, but it does not cause any permanent damage to the knuckles themselves.

What should you do if you think you may have a serious problem with your neck after cracking it a lot?

Cracking your neck is just like cracking your knuckles... You're opening the joint between the facet joints between the cervicle veterbra; the resulting vacuum "sucks" a small bubble of nitrogen into the joint. This results in the "popping" sound. Numerous studies have proved that no damage is being done to the articular bones... The biggest indicator of damage to a joint is "pain" and stiffness...
