When connecting rails by joint, they must ensure that all the nuts and screws are completely tightened. They must ensure the track is in gauge in how far they are spaced. The also must make sure that the track is level. Additionally, railroad signals work by a light electrical current that runs in the rail, so they must also make sure to make clean wire connections from rail to rail.
By welded rail, they need to make sure all of the above is correct except the screws and wire for signalling. They must also ensure not to overdo the welding and that it does not warp the rail. As with all welding, they must ensure, especially true for the weight of trains, that the weld is very throughout and strong.
