If you can access the BIOS, on some BIOS, you can change the Master Boot Record Security setting to "disable". Then the MBR can be written to. After the machine is configured, change the MBR Security back to "enable" in order to prevent virus programs from being written to the MBR. This method has been sucessful for me on HPCompaq machines when reinstalling the XP operating system from the reload CDs.
