What is the problem when gears take long to shift on a 97 jetta and when they do shift they jerk and also makes a grinding noise?

yes i got that problem too i just take my foot off the gas around 5000rpm automatics from that run have a tendency to leak internally, so the car thinks it's shifting 2 gears at once, keep the fluid up, drive it till it dies, then get a stickshift.
