there is a small leak in the hoses or around the outside rim of your radiator
It should reset itself when the coolant is back to the appropriate level as long as the sensor is working properly. If you look in the overflow reservoir and can see coolant, the sensor or wiring might be the problem.
In the engine compartment, on the left side of the engine is the coolant reservoir. In the coolant reservoir, there is a sensor at the bottom of the reservoir. This sensor is supposed to let you know when you are low on coolant, but can also become defective, and give you a "false-positive" reading. The only way to know this is to check your coolant when the low coolant light comes on. If there is a significant decrease in coolant, you may have a problem in the cooling system , but if you don't, chances are the sensor isn't working. If the sensor is the problem, you can unplug it from the coolant reservoir, by unscrewing the two screws holding the reservoir to the car's inside firewall, then tilting the back of the coolant reservoir forward until you see wiring coming from the bottom of the reservoir, which is the plug for the low coolant sensor. Unplug the sensor, and the low coolant light won't come on anymore. However, you will now have to make sure you check your coolant level in the reservoir on a regular basis.
it is normal, when the coolant is hot and pressure built, the pressure cap allows the coolant to drain to reservoir to reduce pressure in the cooling system But, if it continually does this whereby the reservoir overflows and the vehicle overheats due to a lack of coolant actually in the radiator when cool, there may be an overheating problem or blown head gasket on the engine.
Check for a blown fuse - if this is problem and continues to blow fuse you will have to further investigate circuit for dead short or overload

NOTE: this answer is describing the location of the engine coolant temperature sensor - NOT the coolant sensor in the reservoir that warns when the level gets too low.The coolant temperature sensor is located directly adjacent to the thermostat housing. The thermostat housing is what the upper radiator hose (toward the right side of the engine compartment) connects to. You do not have to replace the reservoir to replace this part, but leaky coolant reservoirs are a common problem on this model.
The coolant level switch on a 95 Achieva has a sticking problem. If you tap the coolant tank near the sensor the light will go out
Check the level in the coolant reservoir. There is a line "wall" in the jug. The coolant level should be just above that line. If it is then check if your reverse lights work. They are on the same fuse. If they work, you probabaly need a reservoir as the level switch is faulty

There is an overflow hose behind the reservoir:) I have a 1999 Oldsmobile alero and I have the same darn problem! Coolant spits out it, then all the sudden it runs hot and I have to fill it again. Think it has something to do with protecting the engine? Just wait for your water level light to come on in your dash. There is a sensor under the reservoir. Then fill it up. Ive tried everything aside from catching my alero on fire. I will never buy another one. Nothing but problems hard to diagnose.
I had the same problem on my car. turned out to be a blown head gasket. the no. 1 cylinder was pushing hot gasses into the coolant jacket.
