it is normal, when the coolant is hot and pressure built, the pressure cap allows the coolant to drain to reservoir to reduce pressure in the cooling system But, if it continually does this whereby the reservoir overflows and the vehicle overheats due to a lack of coolant actually in the radiator when cool, there may be an overheating problem or blown head gasket on the engine.

Can a crackedhead make a car run hot?

Depending where it is cracked, yes. A cracked head can also simulate an overheated engine by pushing coolant out of the coolant reservoir.

What makes a coolant reservoir over flow after 3 minutes of car idling?

I had the same problem on my car. turned out to be a blown head gasket. the no. 1 cylinder was pushing hot gasses into the coolant jacket.

What would cause the coolant level to rise in the reservoir when engine is hot?

Cooling systems differ, but most are pretty basic and operate at a set pressure. As the engine warms and the thermostat opens, it allows circulation of the coolant and pushes the hot from the motor to the radiator to cool before re-entering the engine. As the general temperature of all coolant reaches a normal, the pressure increases slightly due to the hotter temperature and a little steam. If its only a small rise in the fluid level of the reservoir and your engine runs at its normal temperature, its probably the normal way its designed to function causing a pressure vacuum that draws into the reservoir if pressure is above normal while at temperature and wept back into your radiator as your engine cools and depressurizes. Beware of an excessive amount entering your reservoir and higher than normal operating temperatures, because this may be a sign of a head or head gasket failing and allowing excess gases and air to escape the cylinder thus pushing the coolant out of your system and into your reservoir.

Why does the water i put into the overflow not move to the radiator?

Coolant only moves from the overflow tank/container to the radiator when the engine is cooling. It flows the other way (into the tank) as the engine heats up and coolant expands. If coolant isn't moving into the radiator when the engine is cooling down there could be a couple of reasons. 1. The engine really never got warm enough to begin pushing coolant to the tank and the radiator is already full. 2. The radiator cap is faulty and should be changed. 3. If the coolant hasn't been changed for many years it's possible (though unlikely the hose linking the tank and radiator is plugged. Thoughts: Be sure you're adding a 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water to the overflow tank, not just water. Note the coolant level in the tank with the engine cold then go for a drive. Check the level again. It should be a little higher. Let the engine cool and the level should be back to the original point. If that's the case you're good to go. If coolant is pushed into the overflow but the level doesn't drop again blame the radiator cap and get a new one. Cheers

Why does the coolant fill up the reservoir and not return back to the radiator leaving the radiator bone-dry on a 93 Honda Civic DX?

Hey Ken==The radiator cap isn't sealing. Replace it. GoodluckJoe If replacing the radiator cap is not enough then look at your radiator as the problem. Your radiator when the car is running should be the same temperature top to bottom. Run your hand down the radiator (careful you can burn yourself) and see if it is cool toward the bottom. If it is cool at the bottom but hot at the top your radiator is clogged. Flush does not work so save your money. I would start looking online for a new radiator their cheap enough. Good luck. -mspolyar If it still vents with a new cap then the excessive pressure could be due to a blown head gasket pushing combustion pressure into the coolant system, if the vehicle has been overheated recently it is a good possibility I had the same problem. Check your upper and lower radiator hoses. You might also need to replace your thermostat. The thermostat is a spring seal for coolant. These get stuck open and closed often for civics in the 1990's. I had to replace mine 2 times within a month. Part of it was my fault, because i drove it like i stole it. When your engine gets hot, the thermostat opens up and lets coolant in. When it is too cold, it closes and doesn't let coolant into your engine so it will warm up. Your thermostat probably got stuck closed. Also, check the little hose running from the reservoir tank to the radiator, it might be clogged.

What is causing overheating and leaking coolant on 2001 Polaris 425 sportsman ATV?

Check your oil for anti-freeze , check the anti-freeze for oil . Check the tailpipe to see if anything is coming out . If there is no visable leaks , its possible that the head gasket is blown pushing compression into the cooling system , pushing the coolant out . Check the filler assembly at the radiator , to see if it has gotten hot and warped .

Do you have to bleed the cooling system after changing the thermostat on a 1996 Chevy Cavalier and if so how?

I would. Just remove radiator cap and start the engine and let it run for 30 minutes. As it runs, the stat will open and coolant will circulate pushing the air out. You will need to watch it and top off the coolant. After 30 minutes of cycling this will be done.

How do I remove the coolant cap off a 1994 ford explorer?

Only remove the radiator cap when the engine is cold Turn the cap counterclockwise until it stops , then while pushing down on the cap keep turning the cap counterclockwise until it releases

How do you know if the head gasket is blown on a 1990 crx?

if your car is getting hot its usually the first clue... if its smoking (coolant out of the exhuast) or is making exsesive pressure in the coolant system its from a bad head gasket letting water in the cylinders and then exiting out the exhuast or vicversa pushing air from the cylinders in the coolant system... either way if its doing that it most deffinatley the head gasket

How do you find out why your 1988 ford ranger xlt is overheating?

These are all the things that I know of to check for overheating: 1. Check for low coolant 2. See if the radiator is blocked for any reason. (outside) 3. Check and replace the thermostat (if nessesary) 4. Cooling fan may not be working properly (not engaging properly or a bent blade perhaps) 5. Bad coolant (Smells horrible) 6. Oil may be too low (causes friction) 7. Water pump may be starting to go bad (not pushing the correct volume to cool engine) 8. Radiator or radiator cap may be bad (bad rad. internals or just the cap isn't pressurizing right anymore) 9. A coolant hose might be bad (blocked or sludge lined causing coolant to slow down) 10. Coolant passage in engine might be blocked (coolant sludge build-up, caused by not changing your coolant) I know some of those things sound scary, but I am just naming all the possible things that I know of that could be wrong, if you can't do it yourself, take it to a shop and they can diagnose and fix the problem fast and cheap. Its better to give up before you break something serious... trust me I know all about that lol

95 windstar GL 3.8 I changed the water pump and thermostat now its pushing coolant into the overflow bottle and running hot I tried to bleed the air from the system by turning on the heater still hot?

replace the radiator cap. I fought this for 2 days . after changing theromostats twice and bleeding air from the system, I finally changed the radiator cap and solved the problem.

How can you keep your car from over heating?

1.) WITH THE ENGINE OFF! and the ENGINE COLD! -take the radiator cap off and see if you can see water (or coolant) inside. If not, add enough water or coolant until it you can see it. Put the cap back on securely.2.) WITH THE ENGINE OFF! and the ENGINE COLD!-Check to see if the belt that runs over the pulley that turns the fan behind the radiator is tight. It should push in about an inch by just pushing it with your finger. If not, tighten it or have a mechanic do it for you.3.) WITH THE ENGINE OFF!-Check to make sure you have enough engine oil in the engine.
