Perhaps you have not engaged the clutch? The accelerator is designed to increase the RPMs. If you provide no resistance it will rev until it explodes.
If the engine is revving up, then the transmission is having problems. If the engine is not revving, then check the linkage from the accelerator to the throttle body.
I have the same problem, and I've been told the most likely reason is the accelerator cable needs replacing, or there is a problem with the automatic choke! Hope this helps. disconnect the battery for a couple of hours - it works!
