The point of food miles is to calculate how long of a distance it took to get your food to the supermarket, and then on your plate. Moreover, it makes the individual more conscious as to the consequences of fuel consumption (and the waste it produces because of the distance the food travels), if food miles are calculated and valued.

Although, transporting food is one of the fastest-growing sources, it causes pollution and it produces carbon dioxide which is bad for the environment. This is like a greenhouse effect, it goes in but it doesn't come out. This causes climate change. Food miles can also be a cloudy issue as well. The processing, storage, and the way we shop for food all play a role in food's carbon footprint.If, we reduce food miles, the environment will get much better, but then we, the UK, would lose our choices of food products, which don't grow in the UK. The world countries and the international trade will get worse if food miles stop as they lose a source of income and the international trade will weaken severely due to less food trade, and due to food exporters!
