i had my sterling pump replace but the one they put dose not look like it totally fits but it working but with a grinding sound

Since you did not list the year, make and model, the only way This could happen would be if the ECM detected a problem with the VSC and set the engine and transmission into limp mode and then the problem was so severe it stalled the engine.
