Primary elections begin in January of the election year. The successful candidate spends all his time traveling to the states holding their primaries and caucuses that month, making speeches and drumming up votes in order to win enough convention votes to get nominated. After he gets the nomination, he begin the actual campaign, traveling to battleground states, making speeches, holding rallies, shaking hands , engaging in televised debates with his opponent and try to gain enough votes to win. The party will activate its machinery to set up rallies, raise money , make telephone calls and get out the vote on election day
