Haynes manual says SAE 75W/90W GL-5 lubricant. Mine takes approximately 3 1/2 qts (6.8 pints). Use a suction gun to get it in or take it to a shop that can do it easy.

Except for a 3 speed Wrangler, a 2002 Jeep trans is electronically controlled and wouldn't have a governor. The 3 speed auto in a Wrangler has a governor that control what speeds the trans shifts at.

You most likely have low tranny fluid. Check and add proper type & amount of fluid.

Pennzoil makes a great product called synchromesh but any GL3 or GL4 fluid will work Pro's like Redline MTL
remove the plug on the side of the trans, the fluid should be even with the opening, and will flow out when it is full enough
Thw wrangler got the 4 spd about 2002. The 4 spd is better for fuel economy,
6.8 pints of 75W-90 Manual Trans Gear Lube.
