Our Blessed Lord's death, and its purpose is covered in the Catechism under articles 571 through 637, 790, and 1214.

The Scriptures tell us "Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into His Glory?" (Lk24:26-27, 44-45) Christ's death was redemptive for us according to God's plan of salvation. "For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God." (2 Cor 5:21) His entire life was an "offering to the Father for us, and He became the "Lamb who takes away the sin of the world." (Eucharist Communion Rite). Jesus substitutes His obedience for our disobedience (Catechism of the Catholic Church 615), and consummates His sacrifice on the Cross (CCC 616-617)
