To provide a seal between the cylinder walls and pistons and oil from crankcase, thereby allowing for compression of cylinder gas / air mixture till spark plug ignites and pushes the piston down, again sealing - most have three ring, two upper compression and one lower oil ring. Defective rings can cause low compression, hard starting, decreased performance, increase fuel consumption, engine miss and usually considerable "blow-by" gasses. Combustion gas pressurizing crank case pushing oil vapor into air filter, out dipstick hole, breather pipes, etc. Defective oil rings will leave a trail of smoke behind your vehicle while driving. Smoke most notable under deceleration and initial start up - usually indicates valve seals.
