This question will have many different answers depending upon which religious group you ask. The term 'angel' means messenger in both the Hebrew and the Greek. The term archangel means 'chief' messenger and is only once directly associated with a name in Jude 1:9 - Michael. It is however, used as a descriptive voice for Jesus in 1 Thessalonians 4:16.
I believe it would be fair to say that the majority would consider there to be 3 archangels - Michael, Gabriel, Lucifer - though some will have up to 7 while some will argue over the name Lucifer. Some will associated the term in 1 Thes 4:19 to indicate Jesus while some think Michael is Adam and Gabriel is Noah. In some Jewish traditions/beliefs, there is a chief angel called Metatron. Raphael and Uriel are another 2 commonly thought of archangels while Azrael is considered the angel of death in Islam. And the list goes on...
