It's hard to say. It's all about personal preference. A downpipe usually implies that there is just one hole at the end of the stem creating a "chug" effect when you inhale. A diffused downpipe or "diffuser" has multiple holes at the end making for more of a swishing sound when you inhale. The holes are beneficial because it creates more smoke bubbles per hit there by letting the smoke be exposed to more water and there by cooling the smoke.
