The dew claw is on the back of the front leg about an inch above the foot of a dog. Some people have them removed when the dogs are puppies. If not, you will feel a nail, just like a dog's toenails, protruding from that area. It is said that it is called the dew claw because it merely touches the dew on the grass as a dog walks.

In wild canids such as wolves, the dew claw is helpful in climbing and maintaining traction on unsteady terrain like snow, ice and mud. However, in domestic Dog Breeds the dew claw is not as firmly set and is sometimes removed shortly after birth to prevent traumatic injury later in life.

The dew claw is a primitive digit that doesn't actually serve any purpose. Many breeders have them removed so that they do not become ingrowing or snag when the dog is older. The dog's normal claws are used to grip whilst the dog is running.

Dew claws are the fifth digit on the inside of a dog's leg. They are primitive and not used by the dog, so many breeders have them removed when the puppy is 3 or 4 days old. This means that the dew claw will not become ingrowing or get snagged when the dog is older.

Many dew claws become ingrown or snag and become infected. For this reason, some breeders think that it is kinder to have them removed when the dog is very young.
