The "Hail Mary" is a special devotion to the Mother of Jesus Christ. It begins with the salutation of the Angel Gabriel when he came to tell Mary she had been chosen. This is the Annunciation, and is a Holy Day in the Catholic Church. "Hail, Mary, full of Grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus." The text is from Luke 1:28. The last half of the prayer is a petition to her as the Mother of us all, since all believers are brothers and sisters of Christ and, hence, her children. it is the quote of the first words spoken to her by her cousin, Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, after the Annunciation. "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death. Amen." The prayer is the focal point of the Rosary, which is the primary Marian devotion. The physical Rosary, which people carry, consists of a Crucifix, on which is said the "Apostles Creed", 3 large beads, on which is said the "Lord's Prayer", and 1 small bead for the "Glory Be". Then the Rosary forms a loop, with 5 groups, each consisting of 1 large bead, for the "Lord's Prayer" and 10 small beads for the "Hail Mary". The "Glory Be" is repeated after every decade (group of 1 large bead and 10 small ones). Each Decade of the Rosary celebrates and honors one "Mystery", or condition in her life (some non-Catholic writers have said that the decades honor Jesus' life, but that is wrong. The confusion comes about because most of the Mysteries are About Him, but Concern her.). A Complete Rosary is made up four regular Rosaries. Each regular rosary comemorates a set of 5 Mysteries. Example: The Joyful Mysteries are 1) the Annunciation, 2) the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth, 3) the Birth of Jesus, 4) The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, and 5) The finding of Jesus in the Temple. Those are the 5 decades of 1 regular Rosary. The Other Mysteries are: Sorrowful, which deal with Jesus' arrest and Crucifixion; Glorious, which are about the Ascension of Jesus, the Assumption of Mary, and the founding of the Church; and Luminous, which concentrate on her continuing role in the life of the Church. While praying the Rosary, the Catholic meditates on each Mystery in order, Thinks about how the event impacted Her life, and draws parallels and inspiration in his/her Own life. The physical Rosary, with its beautiful beads and silver, was developed as an aid for the people of the 15th Century, who were mostly illiterate and uneducated, when the Rosary was begun, to remember a complex set and order of prayers. Although it is Beautiful, it had, and still has, no importance aside from that. It is Not a Holy Relic. Catholics do Not worship the Rosary. They treasure them as gifts, which often comemorate special occasions, and as a reminder of a Beloved person, much as one might treasure a physical item that reminds them of their Earthly Mother or Father. While Catholics do not consider Mary the Mother of Jesus Divine, they Do believe that she, as his Mother, is Very Special to him. They Love her because God loves her; they Revere her because God Honored her, and they consider her to be the premier Human. First among equals, as close to God as a human can get. She is the Only human being ever granted the ultimate gift of God - the right to carry Him in her Body. For nine months, He was Part of her. Catholics do not believe that she, of herself, can do anything; but, as we can all petition God on each other's behalf, a request from her is Specially honored. Therefore, Catholics ask her to pray for them.

Who said the Hail Mary to Mary?

Actually, the words "Hail Mary" were not found in the New Testament, and the prayer to Mary known today as part of the Rosary is a much later additions to the Christian (especially Roman Catholic) canon of prayers. The original greeting to Mary did not use her name: it was "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee." It was spoken by the Angel Gabriel, as quoted in the Gospel of Luke. Years later, when the role of Mary, as the Mother of Jesus and the Blessed Virgin, was expanded, prayers specifically asking for her intercession and help were developed-- but church scholars do not believe the "Hail Mary" prayer was used before the Middle Ages; and in its original Latin form, the prayer we know today was called the "Ave Maria."
