This was explained to me by a person born in Poland as being a racial slur. Polish and polish (as in Shinola boot polish) are spelled the same. We know what polish is, but the slur enters as a "put down" to the people from Poland. I will never use that phrase again. However, I do not know the timeline or origin. It was suggested, perhaps the 1940's. I have heard that expression used since the 40's. "You don't know s--t from Shinola". The Polish people are a noble people. I hope the expression disappears.
