In some form or another, animal shelters have been around since the beginning of time. Man has always cared for animals, and helped those in need. The first actual humane society was created by Henry Bergh in April 1866 when he founded the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Based on the latter, animal shelters have been around for the past 145 years

Recent years have seen ongoing growth in the number of no-kill shelters, while successful efforts at population control have lessened the stress placed on facilities that care for unwanted or stray animals. Statistics provided by the Humane Society of the United States indicate that between 1973 and 2007, the rate of euthanasia dropped by more than 60%.
take it into a animal rescue centre, preferably one that never puts a healthy animal down, otherwise a perfectly good dog could die just because no-one will adopt it. otherwise, you could look after it, see if you could find it's owner if it ever had one, if not you could keep it as long as you look after it properly
Well, most shelters require you to be 16 years of age to volunteer. I am a couple of years older, and have tried to volunteer, but have been told that I was to young. But, all the shelters have told me, if my mum or dad worked with me, i would be allowed. HOPE THIS HELPED!
