It is at the back of the engine compartment, in front of the driver, under the battery platform, between transmission and firewall. Underneath it is above the longitudinal member that runs from the front motor mount to the rear. Remove the 4 lock nuts and 4 bolts to remove the member, exposing the motor mount.
Suppoit the motor/transmission before loosening any rear motor mount bolts ( the ones you see under the battery support). This can be done with an engine hoist, a floor jack or chain and a couple of 2x6's across the engine compartment.

How do you remove the rear drum brakes on a 1998 ford escort
On that year of Escort the engine only had one motor mount and that was on the left side of the engine as you are facing it from the front. The rest of the mounts were on the transmission. To change the left top mount you need to jack the motor up under the oil pan with a floor jack. Use a block of wood under it to protect it. It is cast aluminum. Jack the engine up until you see the motor mount move. Then you know it is safe to take it off. Put the new mount in, lower the jack under the oil pan and you're good to go.
