It"s the Ignition switch costs about $150.00 to replace. It is a common occurrence in Saturn's.
ANOTHER PERSPECTIVEOn the other hand, try spraying some graphite into the lock mechanism. It USUALLY won't work, but it does occasionally and if you can get by without replacing the switch it will be a lot cheaper for you.Don't use penetrating oil, since it will just leave a gummy residue that will make the problem come right back. You MIGHT be able to get it to work if you use silicone lube.
I don't remember if the 97 has air bags, but if yours doesn't, you could replace the switch yourself and save a bunch.

Some Saturns have a problem with their ignition system. It just freezes up for no reason. You have to replace the ignition cylinder, and probably the ignition switch, too. I have an '06 Ion that just did that a couple weeks ago. I took it to a mechanic, and he had to call Saturn to find out what was wrong with it. They told him to replace the whole steering wheel column, but I found out later that I probably could have just done the ignition switch and cylinder. You have to buy the parts from Saturn, and get the ignition cylinder keyed by a locskmith.
