There is no political relationship between Britain and the Republic of Ireland. Both are independent countries with their own governments. However, Northern Ireland, within province of Ulster, is an integral part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Ireland and Britain have strong diplomatic relations and generally a good relationship now, compare to other times in their history, when Ireland was under British rule.

The United Kingdom is a country which contains 4 countries; Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland. However, the Great Britain constitutes England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland is on the island of Ireland, which also includes the Republic of Ireland. The Republic of Ireland is officially known as Éire or Ireland. In this case, Ireland is a separate entity with its own jurisdiction. Therefore, it could be summed up that Ireland (a country) and Britain (an island containing the countries England, Scotland and Wales) are two separate entities. Ireland, the island, contains the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom.

Ireland has a very long history with Britain, which goes back as far as 1169. From then there have been plantations in Ireland, most notably in the north of Ireland/ There were many revolutions and rebellions. The history between Ireland and Britain is long and complex, too much to go through in an answer like this. So to take a simpler look at what led to the current situation, all of Ireland was under British rule, being part of the United Kingdom between 1801 and 1922. Then, what is now the Republic of Ireland became independent and what is now Northern Ireland stayed as part of the United Kingdom. That is the situation to this day.
