The indicator would be a small piece of metal on your brake pad which strikes against your rotor when the brake pad is worn down. The noise you will hear is a sqeeking noise. Other signs of brake wear would be a low brake peddle this means you could need to adjust your rear shoes or your front pads are worn down or of course both...
