There are many types of fungus ranging from mushrooms and toadstools to yeasts and other groups. The study of Fungii is called MYCOLOGY and as the literature is enormous, here we can only look at a few examples. Roughly fungii can be divided into three broad groups: 1. Saprophytes which live on dead or decaying organic matter 2 . Parasites, which infect and eventually kill living organisms 3. Symbiotics, which form a partnership with organisms such as Lichens So, 1. SAPROPHYTES these include fungii such as MUSHROOMS and TOADSTOOLS. These live on waste organic matter such as cow dung. Because the Mushroom has no means of creating its own nutriments via photosynthesis it must derive its food substances from existing organic compounds. The role of the various fungii in this regard is vital. It BREAKS DOWN the organic material and RECYCLES it into the earth. Next 2. PARASITES. We are all familiar with the fungus which invades Elm Trees and eventually kills them off. But there is another fungus that penetrates the body and brain of certain ANTS. When this happens the infected Ants die. It seems that the fungus acts as a BIOLOGICAL CHECK, thus preventing one species from dominating others. Finally, 3. SYMBIOTICS. Certain fungii form a partnership with certain types of Algae and a this is known as LICHEN. Lichen are often seen in the orange or brown spots on old walls and buildings. Over a long period, the acids released by the fungal part of the Lichen causes the material to break down and return to the earth. The partnership, SYMBIOSIS, works well. THe fungus supplies the mineral and other components derived from breaking down the stone wall. Whereas, the Algae supplies the sugars derived from its ability to synthesise sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water. It does this because of the chloroplasts with which it is endowed.
