When we refer to the phosphate - PO4= - ion, the addition / phosphorylation and removal / de-phosphorylation of this phosphate group / moiety (thereby altering the enzyme's shape) is the way that some types of enzymes are turned on or off / activated or deactivated. The Kinase group of enzymes - that control the Cell cycle - is an example.
